Background

Marquet's leadership model fills a gap in leadership literature that we share with great enthusiasm.

Captain David Marquet was accustomed to giving orders. In the challenging environment of the USS Santa Fe, a nuclear-powered submarine, it was crucial that his men performed their jobs well. However, the ship was plagued by low morale, poor performance, and the worst feedback in the fleet.

One day, Marquet unknowingly gave an impossible order, and his crew still attempted to follow it. He realized he was in a directive culture where blind obedience led to actions without thought. On a submarine, they were all in danger unless they fundamentally changed the way they did things.

Marquet then changed his leadership style: with the approach he developed, he managed to have each crew member take responsibility for their decisions, resulting in the Santa Fe crew earning awards that were unprecedented in the US Navy.

Regardless of your company or position, you can apply this leadership approach in your work to create a workplace where everyone takes responsibility for their actions, people are more motivated and engaged, and everyone takes on leadership for themselves.

We have developed a workshop concept that vividly explains the idea of "empowering leadership" through numerous concrete examples. To recreate the scenes on the Santa Fe, we have built a submarine replica specifically for the seminar room!

Inside the Submarine

Dive with us into the atmosphere of a submarine and experience firsthand how Captain Marquet shaped the crew with his leadership style.

We have developed submarine props specifically for the workshop to relive key scenes. Participants take on roles of a submarine crew in short sequences.

We created submarine sets for the workshop to authentically recreate key scenes. Then, the connection to the working world is explored. In the picture is the engine telegraph, which also plays a special role in the workshop.

MEANING Forest

MEANING Forest

Participants reflect on their role in change through the Meaning Forest. Inspirational questions attached to various trees encourage participants to think about their own leadership role. Afterwards, participants exchange thoughts in a plenary session.
