Overview hierarchy on board
1 |
AdmiralTask Senior role is as observer and inspector on board. Observes, reviews and evaluates the performance of the crew during and after exercises. |
2 |
CaptainTask The lieutenant captain receives his mission orders from the admiralty. He is responsible for the tactical implementation and safety of the mission and thus also for every sailor on board. He has to ensure that everyone on board contributes to the success of the mission. He works closely with his first watch officer, who stands in for him during his breaks and sleeping hours. |
3 |
1st OfficerTask 2nd highest rank on board also called "1WO" (1st watch officer). Stands in for the captain on the bridge and takes command in his absence. He passes on the captain's orders to the responsible officers / non-commissioned officers. In addition, he controls the logbook by having the officers enter the important events of the day/exercise. |
4 |
Chief Engineer "LI"Task Leads as officer the engineer, the mate at the diving station and the sailor for mooring and casting off. His team is responsible for the maintenance and proper functioning of the propulsion equipment. He gives command for the operation of the depth rudder and the diving and control cells with which the diving depth is controlled.
5 |
Chief Navigation Offizier "NAV"Task Leads the radio chief mate, the chief mate on sonar ("soni") and the helmsman. Is responsible for the correct navigation of the submarine and manages and updates the nautical chart by entering the course of the boat (and other boats if necessary) on the chart.
6 |
Fire ChiefTask In case of firefighting, the fire chief is in command of all firefighting sailors. He is responsible for fire fighting and defence against all dangerous situations on board. In the event of a fire alarm, all persons involved shall wear protective clothing and helmets and fight the fire as quickly as possible. A fire on the submarine dramatically reduces the survivability of the crew and must therefore be brought under control as quickly as possible (within 30 seconds).
7 |
Radio operator - chief petty officerTask The radio mate is responsible for sending and receiving, as well as encoding through the Enigma. Passes on received radio messages to the officers. Transmits and receives only when surfaced or at periscope depth, when the radio antenna protrudes from the water.
8 |
Logistics - MateTask Responsible for the supply of spare parts and materials. Organises required food, factory trains, materials and equipment for maintenance on board. |
9 |
Machinist - SailorTask Operates the engine telegraph as instructed by the helmsman or chief engineer. He uses it to transmit the speed of the submarine to the engine room. |
10 |
Diving cells - SailorTask Operates the diving station according to the instructions of the helmsman (officer) or lieutenant at sea. By doing so, he regulates the depth and sinking speed of the boat. As currents, temperature and density of the water constantly influence the buoyancy of the boat, he has to readjust it.
11 |
Reliance - SailorTask Is responsible for mooring and wiring ashore or during mooring and unmooring. Has fire-fighting and hazard prevention as a secondary task and is subordinate to the chief of fire-fighting (boatswain) for this purpose.
12 |
Helmsman - SailorTask Enters course changes using the rudder to set the course and navigate the boat.
13 |
Sonar Chief Petty Officer "Soni"Task Listens for sonar sounds - one of the main tasks of a submarine. Sonar is, in a sense, the eye of the submarine. Good sonarists can identify the ship, type class, direction and speed from the noise pattern.
14 | Smutje - CookTask Is responsible for food preparation and, in cooperation with the mate, for the proper loading of all food on board. In the seminar, he ensures that there are breaks and sufficient drinks. He also reports to the Chief of Fire Prevention for fire-fighting and hazard prevention.
15 | Shipboy/ShipgirlTask Is on board for training as a seaman/shipgirl and thus has the lowest rank. He learns all aspects of sea travel on a submarine.
16 | ReporterTask Is on board as a correspondent to report on the results of the exercises on board, the development of the team and the readiness of the crew. |
